My current work looks at the traditional textile process of rug hooking. I chose to utilize the technique of this process while incorporating historically non-traditional materials. The series of brooches, titled the Hooked Series, consist of powder coated fabricated and forged copper forms and synthetic polyester cording of various colours. The copper forms and colour combinations used relate to specific memories or stories I have personally experienced, just as throughout the years hooked rugs have been used to pass on stories from generation to generation. I myself was introduced to textiles by my own mother, teaching me how to knit and quilt growing up, this is where my interest in textiles began. My goal is to explore how these alternative materials and the form they take will change the structure and meaning of these pieces in comparison to their textile counterparts.
