Anna Torma

Anna Torma was born in 1952, Tarnaors, Hungary and graduated with a degree in Textile Art and Design from the Hungarian University of Applied Arts, Budapest, Hungary in 1979. She has been an exhibiting artist since that time; producing mainly large-scale hand embroidered wall hangings and collages. She immigrated to Canada in 1988.

Anna Torma has exhibited her work internationally and represented in public collections including the Museum of Art and Design, New York, NY; La Peau de l’Ours, Montreal QE; Foreign Affairs Art Collection, Ottawa,ON, MSVU Art Gallery Collection, Halifax, NS; New Brunswick Art Bank Art Collection, Fredericton, NB and Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, NC.

In 2005, Torma received a UNESCO Aschberg Boursary to attend a residence at Cooperations in Wiltz, Luxembourg to complete her embroidery project with mentally handicapped artists. In 2007 she spent 4 months in Paris France as a recipient of the Canada Council’s Paris Studios Grant. In 2008 she received the Strathbutler Award from the Sheila-Hugh Mackay Foundation. Her solo exhibition is an installation project: Bagatelles mounted first at the New Brunswick Museum in St John, NB in 2012, travelled to Bellevue Arts Museum, Seattle, Wa in 2013, the Karsh-Masson Gallery, Ottawa,ON in 2014.

Anna Torma received the Long Term Project Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2013.

She is member of Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and recipient of the Lieutenant- Governor’s Award for High Achievement in Visual Arts.

Anna Torma lives and works in Baie Verte, NB, Canada since 2002.
