Sara Caracristi

Press & Blogs

Sara Caracristi was born in 1983 and spent her formative years in Riverview, New Brunswick. From an early age, Sara showed interest in the arts, whether it was creating with her hands or performing in front of audiences. However, she did not discover her passion for painting until later in her high school years, upon the completion of her first acrylic painting that documented her trip to South America. Sara went on to NSCAD University, graduating in 2006 with a bachelor of fine arts, with a major in painting.

Sara’s art practice involves painting the human figure and behaviours within public spaces. Her compositions are marked by a detached voyeurism, providing a snapshot of the reality of the moment. By excluding most or all of the background elements, she gives little information of the specific location and context in which the figures exist. It is up to the individual viewer to infer a sense of place and time within the social context. By use of light and shadow, Sara extends the characteristics of her subjects.

In many cases the figures are placed on a ground of primarily one colour. Her choice of acrylic paint and polyurethane glazes are used to create a surface that is unique to each piece. With this process Sara creates a depth within her pieces that goes well beyond a physical effect.

Sara has been involved in many group and solo shows throughout Canada. Her work is in both private and public collections throughout North America and Europe. Sara currently resides in Nova Scotia where she devotes herself full-time to developing her work.
