”I have found a rich vein of expression in sculpting Ceramic flowers. Within each petal that is pressed out in the palm of my hand, my finger print becomes traced into the clay. This method of creation is incredibly meditative for me. The pressing of each petal holds a beautiful metaphor: although away from home, the imprint of my hand exemplifies that family is at the core, and our joy of growing and building life is intrinsic in all that my hands create,” Laura Jean Vallentin (formerly Forrester).
Currently residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she received a BFA from NSCAD University in May 2015. Laura's work as a sculptural Ceramic artist is inspired by a deep affiliation with horticulture. Her childhood was spent planting, cultivating, and harvesting fresh cut flowers for her family's stall in the Charlottetown Farmers Market. Her ceramic arrangements reflect these experiences while she speaks to the interdependent structures of family, community, and culture. They have already been in both private and corporate collections. Laura was the recipient of $10,000 from the RBC Art Competition for NSCAD students to create a signature artwork for the new RBC Waterside Centre in downtown Halifax.
