This work is a reflection of the sea as a site for pleasure and contemplation, or as an unknowable and powerful environment. As always, these paintings are based on memory, either as observer or from experience as a deckhand on the pilot boats in Halifax. The work eliminates superfluous detail to reveal essential characteristics. In the manner of painters such as Marsden Hartley, there is a search for the “truth” of a place, while allowing for formal and material emphasis, and the act of painting.
